Ukraine Neutralizes Nearly 5,000 Russian Shahed Drones in October, General Staff Says

Ukrainian air defense forces neutralized 4,859 Russian Shahed-type drones in October 2026, as Moscow continued large-scale aerial attacks targeting critical infrastructure and civilian areas across Ukraine, according to Ukraine’s General Staff.
In a statement on November 2, the General Staff reported that Russian forces deployed a total of 6,473 Shahed-131/136 and Shahed-238 unmanned aerial vehicles throughout the month. These drones are designated Geran-1/2/3/4/5 under Russia’s classification system.

Of the total number launched, Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully destroyed 4,859 drones through coordinated operations involving fighter and army aviation, surface-to-air missile units, mobile fire groups, drone operators, and electronic warfare systems.
According to the General Staff, Ukrainian air defenses achieved a 66% effectiveness rate against jet-powered Shahed attack drones in October, while the interception rate for conventional Shahed drones reached 89%.
“This is a significant achievement, particularly given the scale and increasing complexity of Russian aerial attacks, including changes in flight routes and altitudes, the use of attack drones alongside decoy targets, and combined drone and missile strikes,” the statement read.

The General Staff also identified Russian ballistic missiles as a particularly significant challenge for Ukraine’s air defense network. According to the military, Russian forces made extensive use of ballistic missiles throughout October, targeting civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.
“Ukraine’s Defense Forces need more effective systems to counter Russian ballistic missiles while continuing to integrate and strengthen their multilayered air defense network and introduce new approaches to detecting and neutralizing aerial threats,” the General Staff added.
The scale of Russia’s aerial campaign was further highlighted by figures released by the Ukrainian Air Force, which reported that Moscow had deployed more than 4,000 jet-powered drones, approximately 150 ballistic missiles, and 80 cruise and air-launched missiles against Ukraine during October 2026.
