According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on November 7, the system is operated by personnel of the 96th Kyiv Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade and was supplied to Ukraine by international partners.

The military described NASAMS as one of Ukraine’s most effective medium-range air defense systems, highlighting its mobility and ability to engage different types of aerial threats.

Yevhen, commander of a NASAMS anti-aircraft missile battery, explained that the system can intercept targets ranging from Russian Shahed attack drones to cruise missiles, although it is not designed to engage ballistic missiles.

He identified mobility as one of its main advantages, allowing crews to relocate launchers and maintain operational flexibility during Russian aerial attacks.

The General Staff also introduced Viktoriia, a 21-year-old officer responsible for maintaining the system’s operational readiness. Her duties include ensuring that the equipment can quickly transition to its highest state of readiness and preventing technical failures.

NASAMS, developed jointly by Norway’s Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and the US company Raytheon, uses missiles originally designed for air-to-air combat, including the American AIM-120 AMRAAM.

A standard NASAMS configuration can include three launchers carrying a combined 18 missiles, an AN/MPQ-64 radar, and a fire distribution center. Depending on the missile variant and configuration, the system can engage aerial targets at distances of up to approximately 40 kilometers and altitudes of up to 21 kilometers.

Earlier, Ukraine’s General Staff reported that Ukrainian air defense forces neutralized 4,859 Russian Shahed-type drones in October 2026, out of 6,473 launched by Russia during the month. The interceptions involved surface-to-air missile systems, fighter aircraft, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare units.
