According to Zelenskyy, the Tu-95MS missile carrier was targeted by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) Alpha unit in Engels. Aircraft of this type are used by Russia to carry out strikes against Ukraine.
Engels is home to the Engels-2 airbase, a major hub for Russia’s strategic aviation fleet. Tu-95MS and Tu-160 missile-carrying bombers are stationed at the facility and are regularly used to launch Kh-101 cruise missiles against Ukraine.
The base also contains ammunition and fuel depots, aircraft maintenance facilities, and other equipment supporting bomber operations.

Zelenskyy also said that Ukrainian Defense Forces struck an oil refinery in Russia’s Yaroslavl region over the past day. The facility is located approximately 1,000 kilometers from the frontline.
The Ukrainian president added that Ukrainian forces had also carried out what he described as “just responses” to Russia’s war in the Black Sea.
“I thank all our warriors for their accuracy! All of this is a response to their strikes. Russians must feel what their war is like,” Zelenskyy concluded.

The latest strike comes about a month after a major fire broke out near the Engels-2 strategic aviation base. Open-source analysts identified the affected structure as a military barracks located close to the airfield.
According to Astra on July 25, the fire occurred approximately two kilometers from Engels-2. Satellite data from NASA’s FIRMS system subsequently registered a thermal anomaly in the area shortly after the fire was reported.
