Ukrainian forces evacuated 167 civilians from settlements on the Ukrainian-controlled right bank of the Kherson region during a temporary ceasefire facilitated by US First Lady Melania Trump for a humanitarian mission in the town of Oleshky, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on Facebook on November 2.

Oleshky has been under Russian occupation since 2022, with residents facing severe shortages of food, medicine, water, electricity, and heating. Russian forces have also obstructed humanitarian access and evacuation routes, leaving civilians trapped in worsening conditions. UNITED24 Media reported that some residents were effectively being starved under the occupation.

The evacuation covered communities along the Dnipro that had been subjected to daily Russian shelling, according to the General Staff. The security conditions created by the ceasefire allowed residents who had previously been unable to leave to be moved to safer areas.

Civil-military cooperation units of the South Group of Forces, working with local authorities, evacuated 167 people, including 22 children and 21 people with limited mobility.

The General Staff noted that the operation took place in extremely difficult conditions. Evacuation routes crossed mined and damaged roads, as well as areas containing burned military equipment and civilian vehicles.

Despite those risks, Ukrainian forces continued the operation, with the General Staff emphasizing that protecting civilians remained the priority.

Units of the South Group of Forces are continuing to observe the ceasefire in the area of the humanitarian mission, the General Staff added.

However, Russian attacks resumed within hours of the ceasefire ending. On November 2, Russian forces struck a hospital in central Kherson with a drone, while local officials warned that FPV and other Russian drones had again begun operating across the area.
