Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that his recent letters to both US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin has achieved the specific goals he intended.

Speaking at a press conference following a summit of Nordic and Baltic leaders, Zelenskyy addressed the strategic nature of these communications, which were part of a broader series of letters sent to international institutions, including the European Union and the US Congress, over the past month, according to European Pravda on June 9.

Regarding the outreach to the United States, Zelenskyy explained that his primary focus was to keep Washington’s attention fixed on Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, specifically emphasizing the urgent need for advanced air defense systems.

The Ukrainian leader noted that he aimed to shift American policy focus away from the Middle East to address the critical gaps in his nation’s anti-ballistic capabilities.

"I had different goals. For example, writing to the United States, I really wanted to do everything to shift them a little bit, at least a little bit, from the Middle East to the situation in Ukraine. I don't want, I can't share all the details with you, but my state needs a very significant number of anti-ballistic capabilities," Zelenskyy remarked.

As reported by European Pravda, Zelenskyy also addressed his recent open letter to the Russian leadership, which proposed direct negotiations to end the war. While he refrained from detailing the tactical nature of this exchange, he indicated that the initiative successfully served its purpose.

"I had a goal when I sent a letter to Putin, and I think that I received the result that was needed," Zelenskyy said.

This diplomatic activity follows a recent period of intense international engagement. While US leadership had previously indicated support for the possibility of a direct meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, the Kremlin has publicly dismissed the prospect of such a dialogue.

In late May, Zelenskyy had also written directly to President Trump to warn of the growing deficit in air defense systems and the increasing threat posed by Russian ballistic missiles.

The initial proposal, shared by the Ukrainian president on June 4, highlighted how the relationship between the two nations has shifted over the 26 years that Putin has been in power, moving from economic cooperation to a full-scale invasion.

In that address, Zelenskyy emphasized that this war remains a personal choice of the Russian leader.
