No Current Plans for Trump-Putin Call as US Envoys Maintain Contacts

There are currently no scheduled plans for a telephone conversation between United States President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced, according to a Reuters report on June 9.
Despite the lack of direct dialogue between the two leaders, Peskov noted that American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have continued to maintain active contacts with both Russian and Ukrainian officials.

The two US representatives had previously been engaged in mediation efforts regarding the war in Ukraine, though that diplomatic process stalled in February following the initiation of military action against Iran by the United States and Israel, according to Reuters.
While acknowledging that the mediation process remains on hold, Peskov emphasized that discussions are still proceeding through existing channels. He added that while no specific dates have been set for a potential visit by the US envoys to Moscow, Russian officials would be ready to welcome them at any time.

The Kremlin’s comments followed a statement on June 8 from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who described having a “positive” phone conversation with Witkoff and Kushner during a stopover in Moldova. Zelenskyy publicly praised the American negotiators for their readiness to work toward a settlement of the war in the coming weeks. However, Peskov stated that the US side had not informed the Kremlin about this particular call with the Ukrainian leader, Reuters noted.
Addressing the possibility of European involvement in the peace process, the Kremlin spokesman firmly dismissed the idea, labeling such potential mediation efforts as “unacceptable.” Peskov argued that imposing preconditions on Russia is an illogical starting point for diplomacy, asserting that European leaders appear more focused on sustaining the war rather than facilitating genuine peace talks, Reuters concluded.
This pause in formal American mediation aligns with recent statements from Washington. Donald Trump had previously remarked that Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin should “sort it out” themselves regarding the ongoing war. Trump expressed approval for direct dialogue following a proposal from Zelenskyy for a face-to-face meeting in a neutral country. While Trump supported the concept of direct talks, the Kremlin has remained dismissive of the proposal, instead utilizing lower-level envoy channels to sustain communication.
