Zelenskyy Slams Putin for “Weak” Stance on Direct Peace Negotiation Proposal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has labeled Russia’s response to his recent proposal for peace negotiations as "weak."
The Ukrainian president’s reaction follows an open letter sent on June 4, in which he invited Vladimir Putin to hold direct talks aimed at ending Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. During a public appearance on June 5, Zelenskyy stated that the Kremlin had once again chosen to prolong the fighting.

"Unfortunately, the Russian side is choosing war again. Everyone heard today’s response. A weak response. He just does not want to end the war," Zelenskyy stated.
According to the Ukrainian president, the stance taken by the Russian leadership may cause disappointment among international partners who were hoping for a diplomatic breakthrough. Zelenskyy argued that the Kremlin leader is unwilling to change the current status quo or acknowledge the severe consequences of the war he initiated.
In light of this development, the president urged the international community to intensify pressure on Russia, specifically regarding the country's economy. "That means Russia should have less money, and there should be more pressure on Russia," he noted.

Zelenskyy concluded his remarks by thanking the nations that continue to stand with Ukraine. He reiterated that his government remains committed to achieving a sustainable and real peace.
The initial proposal, shared by the Ukrainian president on June 4, highlighted how the relationship between the two nations has shifted over the 26 years that Putin has been in power, moving from economic cooperation to a full-scale invasion.
In that address, Zelenskyy emphasized that this war remains a personal choice of the Russian leader.
