Mongolia, an International Criminal Court (ICC) Statute signatory, did not arrest Russian dictator Vladimir Putin despite the country’s obligation under an ICC warrant, citing neutrality and reliance on Russia.

In August alone, Russia fired over 200 missiles at Ukraine, not including guided bombs. Allowing Ukraine to target Russian airfields can drastically cut these attacks.

The continued unprecedented number of Russian air attacks on Ukraine has elevated the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Assistance from Western allies has been crucial. How have they helped, and what types of systems does Ukraine currently have?

Dr Zahed “Hamza” is a Syrian doctor who founded Al-Qudes Hospital in Eastern Aleppo during the Syrian war. Hamza talks to us about the systematic targeting of hospitals and medical workers and how Russia’s war crimes seen in Syria are being repeated in Ukraine.

“F*ck friends, we can’t believe that we’re alive,” wrote Ukrainian photographer Maks Levin ten years ago on his Facebook page. “Today, together with journalists Markiian Lyseiko, Ivan Lubysh-Kirdey, and Heorhii Tykhyi, we broke out of the encirclement in Ilovaisk – we experienced being born again.” 

On the 29th of August, Ukrainians commemorate the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine. On this day, ten years ago, the Ukrainian army suffered its heaviest losses in the Donbas region during the withdrawal from the Ilovaisk encirclement.
