Former Ukrainian Ambassador to the US and UN Volodymyr Yelchenko stated that only 2% to 4% of Republican supporters sympathize with Russia, while 50% to 70% support Ukraine, RBC-Ukraine reported on October 29.
“All the polls from recent months show that even among Republican Party supporters, sympathy toward Russia is somewhere around 2%, 3%, or 4%, while support for Ukraine ranges from 50% to 70%,” Yelchenko told RBC-Ukraine.

Earlier in October, US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, for Russia to supply hundreds of thousands of tonnes of diesel to US and global markets, with larger deliveries expected to follow.
Yelchenko argued that recent shifts in Trump’s approach toward Russia have not helped Republican support ahead of the congressional elections.
“Such steps in support of Russia in no way contribute to positive changes in these figures for Trump,” Yelchenko stated in the interview.

Yelchenko assessed that the election results could be unfavorable for Trump and potentially change the balance of power in Congress.
“I think the results of these elections will be disappointing for Trump, because he probably hoped that his steps in October would at least preserve the support Republican candidates already had,” he stated.
A change in the congressional majority could give lawmakers greater influence over budgets, sanctions, and assistance to Ukraine, Yelchenko explained.
“And then there are military aid packages and additional funding for Ukraine,” he told RBC-Ukraine. “It may even be possible to return to the situation that existed under Biden, when there was direct American military assistance and direct financial assistance.”

Yelchenko also argued that genuine negotiations with Russia could begin only after a ceasefire.
“Real negotiations about substance, about Ukraine’s status, about territories, about conditions, about Russia’s responsibility, about compensation—all of this can seriously begin only after a ceasefire,” he said, according to RBC-Ukraine.
Congressional resistance to Trump’s Russia policy has already surfaced over energy imports. US Senator Richard Blumenthal urged a tanker carrying roughly 40,000 tonnes of Russian diesel to turn around, arguing that a presidential license could not override a 2022 law banning Russian energy imports.
