Czechia Pledges to Unilaterally Shield Israel From New EU Trade Restrictions

Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka announced that Prague will block any proposed European Union trade restrictions targeting Israel.
He emphasized that the country is prepared to do so even if it requires utilizing a unilateral veto to halt the measures, according to European Pravda on May 20.

Speaking at a joint press conference alongside Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, Macinka emphasized that Czechia will not permit the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
Saar stated that while certain European governments are “actively damaging” the bloc's relationship with Israel, Czechia continues to prove itself as a true friend.
The statements follow a recent agreement among all 27 EU member states to implement a compromise package focused on measures against Israeli settlers in the West Bank.
Macinka characterized the current package as an acceptable compromise precisely because it omits restrictions against Israeli politicians, reiterating that any attempt to freeze the foundational trade agreement remains completely unacceptable to Prague.
The position maintains Czechia's established foreign policy path. In June 2025, Prague led opposition against suspending the trade pact, and in November 2023, former Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala faced a canceled state visit to Nigeria due to the country's firm diplomatic backing of Israel.

This stance follows a unanimous decision by the 27 EU member states to restrict specific West Bank settlers while avoiding broader economic measures.
In addition to defending its diplomatic alignments in the Middle East, Prague has simultaneously reaffirmed its commitments to international justice within Europe. Czechia officially joined the expanded partial agreement necessary to establish a Special Tribunal focused on the crime of aggression during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, becoming the 23rd state to sign on to the initiative.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha shared the update on social media following a report by Suspilne News on April 28, 2026, expressing hope that other nations would "follow this example."
This development followed Greece’s decision to join the agreement on April 23, 2026, when it became the 22nd participating nation, ahead of a scheduled vote by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on May 14-15 in Chișinău, Moldova.
