Donald Trump May Weigh Historic Wartime Trip to Ukraine

US President Donald Trump is considering an invitation to visit Ukraine following a high-level meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on July 8 on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara.
A United States Department of State official confirmed that the American president has not ruled out the trip, though critical security concerns remain a deciding factor, as reported by RBC.

According to Ian Bateson, an official spokesperson for the US State Department, the fact that Trump did not decline the invitation indicates he is actively assessing the proposal. Bateson noted that since Donald Trump did not say "no," it naturally means he is thinking about it and will make the final decision himself.
The primary challenge for planning such a high-profile visit to a nation facing Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine involves logistical and protective measures.
The State Department emphasized that security is a highly sensitive matter for any sitting US president, noting that Trump explicitly addressed these risks during discussions.

The diplomatic invitation was extended during what was described as a positive meeting between the two leaders, where Trump did not dismiss the possibility of traveling to Kyiv. The spokesperson added that Trump received the invitation, engaged in a productive meeting, and simply discussed the current situation on the ground rather than rejecting the offer.
At the G7 summit, Donald Trump was reportedly highly impressed by Ukraine’s long-range strikes against targets inside Russia and agreed to intensify sanctions against the Russian energy sector.
This stance marked a visible departure from earlier assessments, as American intelligence agencies had previously believed that Russia held the upper hand. However, European diplomats observed a distinct change in the attitude of US officials, who no longer viewed Moscow as winning.
