Finnish Court Hands Down First Prison Term Over Russia Sanctions Evasion

A court in Finland has sentenced a local businessman to three years and eight months of unconditional imprisonment for violating sanctions against Russia, marking the first such conviction in the country.
The court also ordered the full confiscation of his company, Idän Liikenteenvälitys, which also operated under the name Rent ja Kalusto, transferring its assets to the state. The firm bypassed international trade restrictions by exporting 164 trucks and trailers to Russia throughout 2022 and 2023, according to Yle on July 1.

The vehicles were intended for customers in Turkey and Kazakhstan and were only supposed to transit through Russian territory.
However, law enforcement and prosecutors established that the cargo remained inside Russia, leading to charges of violating trade and regulatory acts.
The chief executive officer of the company denied all allegations during the trial, claiming he was set up by external actors.

He insisted that his enterprise operated legally and was genuinely supplying vehicles to Kazakhstan. The entrepreneur stated that he "not considered it probable that the vehicles would end up in Russia." The businessman retains the right to appeal the verdict.
On June 29, 2026, Eesti Ekspress and Finland’s Helsingin Sanomat reported that Estonian border guards had recorded what appeared to be the first known instance of an armed Russian civilian tanker moving through the Gulf of Finland.
Aerial images captured in early May by an Estonian surveillance aircraft showed a Kord heavy machine gun mounted on the Marshal Vasilevsky, a Gazprom liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker that transported cargo to the Kaliningrad region.
Investigative journalist Holger Roonemaa noted that the weapon might have been installed to defend against potential Ukrainian drone attacks near St. Petersburg ports or to deter inspections. This development marked a new escalation regarding Russian shipping in European waters, where vessels faced intense scrutiny due to security risks and connections to Russia's war economy.
