German Intelligence Chooses French AI Firm Over American Rival for Security Systems

The German domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), has selected French AI firm ChapsVision to manage its data systems.
The agency will use the ArgonOS software instead of systems provided by the American company Palantir. This decision highlights a push by German officials to utilize European technology for national security infrastructure, according to POLITICO on May 15.

The BfV intends to use the ArgonOS platform to process both structured and unstructured data for its analysts. This move follows statements made by BfV President Sinan Selen in December, where he noted the agency's preference for European alternatives.
The software is already in use by several French government bodies, including the domestic intelligence service DGSI.
Marc Heinrichmann, chairman of the parliamentary committee overseeing German intelligence, stated that the choice of ArgonOS is a sign of European digital sovereignty.
“Choosing ArgonOS, BfV sends a clear signal regarding European digital sovereignty,” Heinrichmann said. “Whether ArgonOS can keep its head above water in the long term must be demonstrated by its operational use. Performance must remain the primary criterion, not just origin.”
The selection comes during a period of debate regarding Palantir’s presence in Germany. While some local police forces use Palantir and the Interior Ministry is considering it for federal forces, critics have raised concerns about data protection and reliance on US providers.

Palantir CEO Alex Karp has defended his company's technology, stating to BILD that it is used “on every serious battlefield in the world.” He added that while he understands the desire for independent systems, he questioned if Germany could afford to reject Palantir’s capabilities.
The full implementation of ArgonOS depends on upcoming legislative reforms in Germany. These changes are expected to expand the digital powers of the BfV and update regulations regarding how personal data is shared and stored. Until these reforms are passed, the new system cannot be fully deployed.
During his visit to Kyiv on May 12, Alex Karp met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the strengthening of defense cooperation between Ukraine and its partners.
Palantir builds software that helps governments, militaries, and companies make sense of huge amounts of fragmented data. In Ukraine, its AI tools are used by the military to support battlefield analysis, target acquisition, and faster decision-making. The company’s role is to turn scattered information into something that states and institutions can act on quickly.
