Lavrov Accuses Trump of Breaking “A Man’s Word” Over Ukraine Talks in Alaska

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused US President Donald Trump of failing to follow through on understandings allegedly reached with Russian leader Vladimir Putin during their Alaska summit, according to The Moscow Times on July 24.

Lavrov was responding to Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statement that the options discussed in Anchorage for ending Russia’s war against Ukraine had “failed.”

According to Lavrov, the Russian delegation arrived at the summit after reviewing Washington’s proposed settlement framework and ultimately accepted it, despite elements Moscow considered compromises.

“President Trump, and I am not revealing any great secret, repeatedly said: ‘This is our proposal. Yes, it is partly a compromise,’ and we accepted it,” Lavrov said.

Trump then assured Moscow that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would accept the proposal, Lavrov claimed.

“But he added that Zelenskyy would do what he proposed. Well, it did not work out,” he said.

Lavrov insisted that Russia’s “conscience is clear” and suggested Washington had failed to honor its side of the alleged understanding.

“You know what they say: a man’s word—if a man says it, he does it,” Lavrov said. “We said we were ready. But on the other side, this approach was modified.”

Rubio offered a different explanation for why the Anchorage effort collapsed. He said the proposed terms were unacceptable to Ukraine, making an agreement impossible.

“That is precisely why that attempt did not work,” Rubio said. “So we will have to look for new proposals and new ideas, because that option was clearly not acceptable to Ukraine at the time, and I do not think it is acceptable to them now.”

Trump and Putin met in Alaska on August 15, 2025. Neither side publicly disclosed the full terms or understandings discussed during the summit.
