NATO Chief Pledges “Absolute Solidarity” After Russian Drone Hits Romanian Apartment

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Romanian President Nicușor Dan held an emergency phone call following the strike of a Russian military drone into a residential building in the eastern Romanian city of Galați, Rutte wrote in a post on X on May 29.
Following the strike by a Russian “Geran-2” drone—a loitering munition based on the Iranian Shahed design—both leaders used their official channels on X to issue statements and emphasize their coordinated response.

NATO vows to defend every inch of allied territory
Following the discussion, Rutte explicitly reassured Bucharest of the alliance’s full backing and condemned the spillover effects of Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine.

“I assured him of NATO’s absolute solidarity with Romania and expressed sympathy for those injured in the incident,” Rutte stated. “I affirmed that NATO stands ready to defend every inch of Allied territory. We will continue to enhance our readiness to deter and defend against any threat, including from drones.”

The NATO chief emphasized that the attack highlights a greater threat to European security, noting that the geographical boundaries of the war are increasingly being tested by the Kremlin.
“Russia’s reckless behaviour is a danger to us all,” Rutte warned. “They continue to target civilians and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine. And last night showed yet again that the implications of their illegal war of aggression don’t stop at the border.”
Rutte concluded by calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities, declaring that “Russia’s war needs to end, as does Russia’s disregard for civilian safety.” He pledged that the alliance will simultaneously strengthen its domestic defenses and maintain its support for Ukraine.
Romania demands stronger eastern flank air defenses
Romanian President Nicușor Dan framed the drone crash as an unprecedented escalation since the beginning of the Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, placing the blame entirely on the Russian Federation.
“I had a conversation with the NATO Secretary General following the most serious security incident to occur on Romanian territory since the beginning of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine,” Dan wrote. “I strongly condemned this unacceptable violation of Romania’s sovereignty. The full responsibility belongs to the Russian Federation, whose behavior shows total contempt for international law and for the safety of citizens of a NATO state.”

The Romanian president noted that the conversation focused on practical steps to secure the region’s airspace against future incursions, particularly through the deployment of more advanced defensive hardware.
“I thanked the Secretary General and Allies for solidarity and agreed to continue close coordination within NATO to strengthen our defense and the Eastern Flank, especially with anti-aircraft and anti-drone capabilities,” Dan stated. “Romania is a strong ally and will not accept that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine threatens the security of Romanian citizens.”

US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker also voiced strong American support for Bucharest following the drone strike, reinforcing Washington’s commitment to mutual security pacts.
We stand with our NATO Ally Romania and condemn this reckless incursion on its territory. Our thoughts are with the injured in Galati. We will defend every inch of NATO territory.

“We stand with our NATO Ally Romania and condemn this reckless incursion on its territory,” Whitaker stated on X. “Our thoughts are with the injured in Galati. We will defend every inch of NATO territory.”
This high-level coordination follows widespread condemnation from European Union leadership after the Russian drone strike on Galați.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa have recently denounced the incident as a reckless violation of EU airspace, with von der Leyen confirming that Brussels is already preparing a new package of economic sanctions against Moscow, Euronews reported.
Additionally, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas noted that the airspace breach—occurring just a day after EU foreign ministers discussed potential diplomatic tracks—demonstrates Russia’s complete lack of willingness to engage in serious peace negotiations.
