NATO Launches Massive Military Drills Near Russian Border Amid Drone Escalation

NATO has initiated major military exercises just 30 kilometers from the Finnish-Russian border, involving 9,000 personnel from seven member states.
This year’s "Northern Star" drills feature troops from Finland, the United States, Poland, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Hungary, according to Euronews on May 29.

The maneuvers are focused on rapid deployment scenarios, live-fire artillery practice, and the coordination of helicopter units, reflecting a strategic response to rising regional security concerns and the recent spike in drone activity along the eastern flank.
A core objective of these exercises is to refine the integration of sensor networks and autonomous systems. Major Matt Blubo of the US Army stated, “The most important thing is an autonomous destruction network of various drones and unmanned capabilities,” which includes advanced surveillance, sensors, and radar integration.
Despite the focus on cutting-edge aerial technology, NATO leadership maintains that traditional force remains essential. Major Blubo emphasized the necessity of boots on the ground, noting, “Whatever happens, as we see all these technologies, all these innovations with drones, artificial intelligence and everything else, it does not replace the things that you need, such as real bodies.”

He added, “You still need troops on the ground, you need tanks to hold real territories.”
These annual exercises follow a series of recent security challenges. Finnish authorities have reported at least six drone incursions into their airspace since March.
The most recent incident occurred on May 15, when Helsinki-Vantaa Airport was forced to suspend operations, leading to flight cancellations and delays while the airspace was secured. The drills also coincide with growing regional tension following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In early May 2026, NATO forces initiated a series of extensive military exercises stretching from the Baltic states to the Arctic to enhance coordination across the alliance's eastern flank.
The operations, which included the "Spring Storm" drills in Estonia and tactical maneuvers in Lithuania, Poland, and Finland, involved tens of thousands of personnel from multiple member nations, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany.
These exercises were designed to simulate large-scale conventional warfare and incorporated tactical lessons drawn from the realities of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. During this period, Finnish troops conducted artillery training at the Vuosanga range, located roughly 50 to 70 kilometers from the Russian border, as part of the broader effort to strengthen regional security and operational readiness.
