The Norwegian Armed Forces are deploying NASAMS  sensors in Kirkenes, near the Russian border, to detect drones that stray off course. The move will also reinforce the Sør-Varanger garrison with more than 30 soldiers.

The sensors will help the Norwegian Armed Forces detect drones that stray into Norwegian airspace and provide a clearer picture of activity along the border, according to a statement by the Norwegian government on November 3.

Norwegian Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik stated that the government has observed drones straying off course in other countries and is taking the matter seriously. He noted that Norway must remain prepared, even though authorities do not currently observe an elevated aerial threat to the country.

Government officials emphasized that the security measures are preventive and not tied to any specific new threat. The sensors are designed to detect drones, alert personnel to their presence, and provide a clear picture of activity within border airspace.

The military unit assigned to this initiative consists of more than 30 personnel. The group will be stationed within the infantry battalion at the Sør-Varanger garrison through the end of the year.

Sandvik noted that lessons from Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine demonstrate the necessity of maintaining clear situational awareness and securing early warnings. He added that the new sensors will improve Norway's capacity to identify drones across the Finnmark region.

The Norwegian military is also working closely with local police forces, who maintain primary responsibility for monitoring and preventing unauthorized drone flights.

Earlier, it was reported that Norway's military has started informing thousands of citizens that their property could be seized in the event of a war, a measure the armed forces describe as part of broader preparations for a potential national security emergency.
