Poland activated military aircraft and placed ground-based air defense and radar systems on heightened readiness as Russia carried out strikes against targets in western Ukraine, the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command stated in a post on X on October 19.

“Due to strikes by the Russian Federation against targets in the western part of Ukraine, carried out using aerial attack assets, military aviation is operating in Polish airspace,” the command stated.

Under existing procedures, the Operational Command activated the necessary forces and assets through the Air Operations Center and Air Component Command.

“Ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have reached a state of readiness,” the command added.

“These actions are preventive in nature and are aimed at securing and protecting Polish airspace, especially in areas adjacent to the threatened regions,” the command wrote.

The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command noted that it continues to monitor the situation and that subordinate forces remain ready to respond.

Poland has taken similar precautionary measures during previous Russian attacks on western Ukraine. On October 9, Polish forces deployed military aviation and placed air defense and radar systems on alert as Russian strikes hit areas near the border, with the Operational Command describing the measures as preventive steps to protect Polish airspace.
