Poland activated military aviation and placed air defense and radar systems on alert on October 9 as Russia struck targets in western Ukraine.

Poland’s Operational Command of the Armed Forces announced the measures on the same day in a post on X, noting that military aircraft were operating in Polish airspace.

"Ground-based air defense systems and radar reconnaissance assets have reached a state of readiness," the command stated.

The measures were described as preventive and intended to secure Polish airspace, particularly in areas bordering parts of Ukraine affected by the Russian strikes. The command added that its forces remained ready to respond while monitoring the situation.

Poland has repeatedly taken similar precautionary measures during Russian aerial attacks on western Ukraine, deploying military aircraft and increasing the readiness of air defense and radar systems near the Ukrainian border.

Earlier, on September 21, Poland scrambled military aviation and brought its ground-based air defenses to readiness during Russian strikes on Ukraine, standing down later that night with no airspace violation recorded.

Polish fighter jets had also taken off overnight on September 15 as Russia struck western Ukraine with jet-powered drones. Two days later, Russian drone strikes in Ukraine's Volyn region, where one drone came down roughly four kilometers from the Polish border, prompted Poland to deploy aircraft and briefly suspend operations at the Lublin and Rzeszów airports.
