Polish Air Defense Forces Track and Intercept Russian Surveillance Aircraft for Second Time in Days

After intercepting a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane on August 3, two Polish fighter aircraft were scrambled again on August 4 to intercept another Russian Il-20 aircraft 56 kilometers northwest of Koszalin, located in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
Polish Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported the incident on X.

On August 3, 2026, Polish F-16 fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea roughly 60 kilometers northwest of Łeba.
The Russian plane flew in international airspace with its transponder turned off and without a submitted flight plan, prompting Polish pilots to visually identify and escort it away from the area.
Polish Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the operation, noting that it was the second such interception within days following a similar encounter on Friday near Kołobrzeg.
On July 14, Polish fighters intercepted a Russian Il-20 over international waters in what was the tenth documented interception of a Russian military aircraft in the region since the start of the year.
By late July, Polish and Swedish jets had intercepted Russian military aircraft three times within a single week, as Warsaw assessed the threat from Moscow as very high.
