Putin Blasts European Sanctions on Russian Children’s Camps as “Feebleminded Spiteful Stunt”

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has described Western sanctions targeting Russian children’s centres and summer camps as an expression of what he called “feeblemindedness,” according to Vedomosti on June 10.

Speaking on the issue, Putin said such measures reflect, in his view, a lack of common sense.
“From the point of view of the common sense of normal people in Russia, in Europe, and around the world, this is a manifestation of some kind of narrow-mindedness,” he said.
The Russian leader criticised European countries for imposing restrictions on organisations where Russian children spend their summer holidays, calling the move illogical.
“They are introducing sanctions against organisations where our children spend the summer, regain their strength. It’s nonsense, some kind of nonsense, but nevertheless it is being done,” he said.

Putin also said he did not understand what effect the initiators of such measures expected to achieve, suggesting that such actions were intended as what he described as a “spiteful little stunt.”
Putin’s comments on sanctions against children’s centres contrast with accounts of broader practices involving Ukrainian kids. Russian occupation authorities are sending Ukrainian children to defense and sports camps in Russia’s Volgograd region under the cover of so-called “health improvement” initiatives and “free recreation programmes.”
According to the Ukraine’s Center for National Resistance, teenagers attending these camps are subjected to militarised training that includes basic combat skills, tactical medicine, weapons handling, and other military-oriented instruction.
The Center for National Resistance also stated that particular focus is placed on orphaned children. After completing these programmes, some are allegedly transferred to Russian orphanages or so-called military-patriotic institutions.

The organisation argues that these actions form part of a broader system aimed at detaching Ukrainian children from their national identity and integrating them into Russia’s social and ideological framework.
The development comes as the European Commission unveiled a new set of restrictive measures against Russia, with the 21st sanctions package targeting key sectors including energy, financial services, cryptocurrencies, trade, and fisheries.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the proposed measures are aimed at areas considered to have the greatest impact on Russia’s war-driven economy.
The package now requires review and unanimous approval by the Council of the European Union before it can enter into force.
