Sweden Directs 6.9 Million Kronor to Strengthen Ukraine’s Medical Frontline

The Swedish government announced on August 3 the allocation of 6.9 million Swedish kronor (over $723,000) to the Swecare foundation in 2026 to assist and strengthen Ukraine's healthcare system.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, total Swedish assistance has reached approximately 156 billion Swedish kronor (about $16.36 billion) in military and civil aid, including about 28 billion kronor (about $2.94 billion) specifically provided for civilian support.
The government statement highlighted that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine significantly increased the pressure on the Ukrainian health infrastructure while the demand for medical care surged.
The allocated funding aims to reinforce capabilities in several priority areas, including cancer treatment, rehabilitation and prosthetics, infection control, hospital management, and measures against antibiotic resistance.
The funding will specifically enable the rollout of an extensive training program in radiation therapy for Ukrainian medical workers.
“Thanks to support from the Swecare foundation, we are strengthening cooperation between Swedish and Ukrainian actors in the health and medical care sectors, while contributing to reforms in Ukraine and its progress on the path toward EU membership.
These partnerships are also an important opportunity for Sweden to learn from Ukraine’s experience in delivering medical care during crises and war,” said Benjamin Dousa, Sweden’s Minister for International Development Cooperation and Trade.
Sweden’s Minister for Health and Social Affairs, Jakob Forssmed, also praised the ongoing collaboration between the two nations, noting that the countries “can learn a lot from each other” in health and medical care services, particularly regarding the fight against antibiotic resistance.
“Support through Swecare is a key component of this cooperation — it allows us to draw on the experience and knowledge of both the private and public sectors,” Forssmed stated.
The initiative is carried out by the Swecare foundation, an organization that unites Swedish public bodies, regional authorities, medical professionals, researchers, and private companies to support Ukraine’s recovery and development.
The project builds upon earlier Swedish healthcare efforts and aims to establish long-term partnerships between the two countries.
Sweden and Ukraine strengthened their diplomatic and military partnership as both nations worked closely to support Ukraine during Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Swedish Ambassador Martin Åberg and Ukrainian Ambassador Svitlana Zalishchuk focused on critical priorities, including military aid packages, jet fighter agreements, and psychological rehabilitation programs like Repower for front-line Ukrainian medics.
Highlighting a shared history that spanned back to the Viking era, Sweden committed billions of dollars in military, civil, and humanitarian assistance, demonstrating deep support from both its government and society.
