Sweden to Transfer 10 Coast Guard Boats to Ukraine for Rescue and Mine Clearance

Sweden will transfer ten Coast Guard boats to Ukraine to strengthen the country’s waterborne rescue, mine-clearance, towing, and transport capabilities.

According to the Swedish government on August 27, the donation includes both workboats and high-speed boats, all of which will be delivered to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU).

Before the transfer, the vessels will be de-identified and government-specific equipment will be removed. Sweden said the boats will otherwise be handed over in their existing condition. The government did not specify which Coast Guard boat models are included in the package.

Ukraine’s emergency service is expected to use the vessels for rescue operations on the water, including mine clearance in riverbeds. The boats will also expand Ukraine’s capacity for towing and transportation.

“Sweden supports Ukraine on several fronts and is now further strengthening Ukraine’s capabilities at sea. Towing, mine clearance and transport capabilities are all important capabilities that can now be further increased,” Swedish Minister for Civil Defense Carl-Oskar Bohlin said.

Sweden’s Civil Defence Agency will be responsible for transporting the ten vessels to Ukraine.

The boat donation comes amid broader defense cooperation between Sweden and Ukraine. In June 2026, the two countries signed an agreement for Ukraine to procure 16 Gripen E fighter jets, while Sweden is also expected to provide 16 Gripen C/D aircraft as military aid in early 2027.
