The FBI Director Is Going to Moscow for the First Time in More Than a Decade

FBI Director Kash Patel is planning to visit Russia in mid-October 2026, marking what would be the first trip by a head of the FBI to the country since 2013.

Patel plans to make stops in Moscow and St. Petersburg on October 14–15. The visit would be hosted by the FSB , though all travel plans remain preliminary and subject to change, according to Politico.

The proposed visit comes as Washington and Moscow remain at odds over Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while US lawmakers are demanding strict new sanctions against Russia.

It is unclear whether Patel will meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin or top political aides, or what subjects are on the agenda. White House representatives referred inquiries to the FBI, while spokespeople for the FBI and the Department of Justice did not respond to requests for comment.

Patel has a history involving Russia-related issues, dating back to his role as a House Intelligence Committee staffer in 2017 and 2018 during investigations into 2016 election interference. While committee Republicans agreed that Russia conducted influence operations to "undermine the liberal democratic order in the US," they rejected intelligence community findings that Russia sought to aid Donald Trump.

Patel later served on the National Security Council, where he secretly traveled to Syria in 2020 to negotiate the release of two American hostages, and spent years questioning the origins of the Russia probe. He also faced questions over a $25,000 payment for participating in a film funded by a Kremlin-linked media company. His past travel and spending choices have drawn scrutiny on Capitol Hill and frustrated the White House.

Patel has also faced scrutiny over personal activities, including attending the men’s hockey gold medal game at the Winter Olympics in Italy, diving near a sunken battleship in Pearl Harbor, and allegations that he used a government aircraft to attend a performance by his girlfriend. Earlier this month, leading Democrats on the House and Senate Judiciary Committees opened a bipartisan inquiry into his potential misuse of taxpayer funds.

In March 2026, Iranian-linked hackers from the Handala Hack Team breached the personal email account of FBI Director Kash Patel and published a portion of the compromised data online, which included over 300 emails spanning from 2010 to 2019 along with personal photos.

A spokesperson for the US Department of Justice later confirmed the security breach, acknowledging that the leaked materials appeared authentic, while cybersecurity experts noted that the operation was part of a broader Iranian strategy designed to target and undermine American officials.
