Trump Signals Focus on Ukraine Peace Talks Ahead of G7 Working Session

As world leaders gather in France for the G7 summit, US President Donald Trump has signaled a major shift in his focus toward Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking ahead of the summit, Trump characterized recent conversations with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin as “productive,” suggesting that both heads of state may be prepared to engage in formal negotiations to end the ongoing hostilities, according to Suspilne News.

The summit, held in the French town of Evian-les-Bains from June 15 to 17, is expected to serve as a key forum for discussing the framework for potential peace talks. Diplomatic sources in the German government indicate that the most realistic structure for such negotiations would involve a four-party format: Ukraine, Russia, the United States, and Europe.
Officials noted that while the window for diplomacy may be opening, the challenge lies in determining European representation.
"We want the war to end as soon as possible. This is something that is a priority for President Trump, one of his top priorities," stated a White House official.
President Trump and President Zelenskyy are both scheduled to participate in a working session on June 16, though US officials state that while an informal meeting on the sidelines is possible, no formal bilateral session has been confirmed. Trump is also expected to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron on the evening of his arrival.

Ukraine previously transmitted a proposal to Russia to hold a face-to-face meeting between the two heads of state at the G7 summit to discuss a path to peace. The plan envisioned direct negotiations between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin in the presence of G7 leaders, including US President Donald Trump.
Russia failed to provide a clear diplomatic response to the initiative, and following the proposal, Russian forces launched a shelling attack against Ukraine, which officials in the presidential office viewed as the Kremlin’s actual response to the meeting offer.
