Ukraine Proposed Zelenskyy-Putin Peace Talks at G7 Before Russia Responded With Shelling

Ukraine previously transmitted a proposal to Russia to hold a face-to-face meeting between the two heads of state at the upcoming G7 summit to discuss a path to peace, RBC-Ukraine reported on June 15.
The proposal was delivered to the Kremlin through multiple channels, including intermediaries, diplomats, and intelligence agencies. The plan envisioned direct negotiations between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the presence of G7 leaders, including US President Donald Trump.

Russia failed to provide a clear diplomatic response to the initiative, with Russian presidential aide Ushakov instead suggesting that the Ukrainian leadership travel to Moscow.
Following the proposal, Russian forces launched a shelling attack against Ukraine, which officials in the presidential office view as the Kremlin’s actual response to the meeting offer, an informed government source told RBC-Ukraine.

The G7 proposal followed a recent open letter from Zelenskyy to Putin offering a face-to-face meeting in Switzerland, Türkiye, or the Arab world to initiate an end to the war. Zelenskyy confirmed today that he explicitly proposed meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, which is scheduled to take place this week, RBC-Ukraine reported.
Additionally, Zelenskyy spoke with Donald Trump yesterday, with both leaders agreeing to hold a bilateral meeting during the summit.
These diplomatic efforts followed a previous phone call between Zelenskyy and US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who have been acting as mediators between Kyiv and Moscow. During that discussion, the parties reviewed strategic perspectives ahead of the G7 summit and evaluated intelligence on Russia’s intentions.
The call built on previous trilateral technical talks held in Geneva, as Ukrainian leadership continued pushing for direct American involvement in structuring a potential ceasefire agreement.
