Ukraine Eyes Miami G20 for Trilateral Meeting With US and Russia, Zelenskyy Says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the upcoming G20 summit in Miami could provide a venue for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, according to a Suspilne correspondent on September 24.

Speaking at a briefing, Zelenskyy said Kyiv and Washington had already discussed the possibility of using the G20 summit, scheduled to take place on December 20, as a platform for such talks, as well as Ukraine’s readiness to participate. He described the summit as one of the most promising opportunities proposed by the US side for a trilateral meeting that could produce tangible results.
The president added the composition of the G20 could help create conditions for substantive negotiations. Alongside Ukraine’s European partners, the summit will bring together countries including China and India, as well as Middle Eastern states and other nations, some of which maintain economic ties with Russia.
According to him, the presence of this broader group of countries could create an environment conducive to achieving results. He noted that Ukraine would support a trilateral format at the summit if the parties reached the necessary agreement.
The possibility of such talks comes after the United States formally invited Russian leader Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit, scheduled for December 20, 2026, in Miami, Florida.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the invitation following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to Sky News. Rubio said Washington hopes Putin will attend, noting that the summit could provide an opportunity for talks with US President Donald Trump and other world leaders.
Rubio also said the United States would be prepared to play what he described as a “constructive role” in efforts to secure a ceasefire.

However, Moscow has indicated that potential negotiations would not lead to a pause in its military operations against Ukraine. Speaking at a United Nations meeting on September 23, Lavrov said Russia was prepared to engage in peace talks but would continue its military campaign while negotiations were underway.
“We will not pause the special military operation during negotiations in any format,” Lavrov said.
