Ukrainian Soldiers and Pilots Make Historic Debut at Paris Bastille Day Parade

Ukrainian military personnel marched in Paris’s annual Bastille Day parade for the first time in history, accompanied by Ukrainian pilots flying French Mirage fighter jets in the aerial flyover, Suspilne reported on July 14.
The high-profile military procession along the Champs-Élysées took place in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and nearly 30 other international heads of state and government. Among the prominent guests in attendance were Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska, who observed the proceedings from the official viewing platform.

According to Suspilne, the event was explicitly organized around the theme of Europe’s “strategic awakening,” serving as a public demonstration of unified Western defense cooperation as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues.

The aerial segment of the parade showcased a significant display of joint tactical aviation. Suspilne reported that Ukrainian Air Force pilots, currently undergoing training programs in France, participated in the flyover as part of the French Air and Space Force’s National Aerobatic Team.
The aviators operated French Mirage fighter jets, flying directly over the capital. The demonstration served as a highly visible public confirmation of the ongoing transition of Ukrainian aircrews to French-supplied multirole combat platforms, Suspilne wrote.

On the ground, the pedestrian portion of the parade was opened by a vanguard of approximately 500 service members representing the “Coalition of the Willing,” a multinational defense framework supporting Ukraine. As detailed in the Suspilne report, Ukrainian troops marched down the Champs-Élysées shoulder-to-shoulder with military representatives of these coalition nations.
The Bastille Day military parade, held annually in Paris on July 14 since 1880, stands as the oldest and largest regular military procession in Europe. The national event commemorates the storming of the Bastille fortress in 1789—a pivotal flashpoint of the French Revolution—symbolizing the overthrow of absolute monarchy, the birth of modern French republican ideals, and national unity.
The integration of Ukrainian ground and air forces into the national procession coincides with an ongoing diplomatic effort, focused on securing advanced Western military hardware for Ukraine. During the high-profile visit, Ukrainian officials are presenting a newly proposed long-term anti-ballistic defense program to international leaders and aerospace executives, aiming to drum up vital industrial partnerships, funding, and production capabilities to counter persistent Russian missile strikes.
