The United States has delivered a new batch of specialized demining gear valued at $7.9 million to the State Special Transport Service of Ukraine.

According to the US Embassy in Ukraine, humanitarian landmine clearance directly aligns with American security and economic interests by creating safe conditions for US businesses to operate on Ukrainian territory, Hromadske reported on October 28.

The new shipment is designed to help Ukrainian sappers safely and effectively clear landmines, anti-personnel mines, and unexploded munitions across contaminated areas.

Large areas of the country remain heavily contaminated with explosive remnants of war following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The State Special Transport Service works alongside other national agencies to clear hazard zones. The US government has previously funded training programs and instruction for more than 2,200 sappers serving in the unit, as reported by Hromadske.

US-trained units from the agency have already made thousands of areas safe, restoring 1,764 square kilometers of land. During these operations, specialists have identified and neutralized more than 262,000 mines and explosive items.

Almost 23% of Ukraine's territory remains contaminated—roughly 128,000 square kilometers—and full clearance is expected to take at least a decade.

Explosive devices have killed or injured more than 1,358 people since 2022, among them 380 killed, and clearing a single hectare costs at least $1,400.

The contamination keeps growing even as crews clear it. Russian forces have stepped up remote mining of Ukrainian supply routes, dropping explosive charges and magnetic mines from drones around Chasiv Yar and nearby Kostiantynivka in the Donetsk region.

Ukrainian units there must scan and clear the roads before every logistics run, often flying reconnaissance drones ahead of the movement.
