The award was announced in a presidential decree published on the official website of the President of Ukraine on November 2.

According to the decree, Melania Trump received the decoration for her “significant personal contribution to humanitarian support for Ukraine, active human rights advocacy and charitable activities aimed at rescuing Ukrainian children and citizens affected by Russian aggression, illegally deported and forcibly displaced from the territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation.”

In a separate decree, Zelenskyy also awarded Mark Beckman, an adviser to the US First Lady, the Golden Heart distinction.

The awards follow Melania Trump’s involvement in efforts to secure a localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky, Kherson region, aimed at facilitating humanitarian assistance and civilian evacuations.

In an October 23 announcement, the White House said the First Lady had helped broker an agreement between Ukraine and Russia to temporarily suspend military operations in the area, with the ceasefire initially scheduled to begin on October 29.

The arrangement was intended to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and the evacuation of civilians through a designated safe corridor.

Emphasizing the urgency of the humanitarian situation, Melania Trump described the conditions facing residents who remain in the town, most of whom are elderly.

“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster,” Melania Trump stated, highlighting the urgent need for food, drinking water, medicine, and medical care.

Efforts to address the humanitarian situation in Oleshky are expected to continue this week, with Melania Trump scheduled to host representatives from Ukraine and Russia at the White House on November 5 for further discussions on the ceasefire.

According to a November 3 White House announcement, the First Lady independently initiated engagement between the two countries and helped facilitate the ceasefire agreement covering Oleshky and surrounding areas of the Kherson region.

The upcoming meeting is expected to focus on the ceasefire arrangements as part of ongoing efforts to facilitate humanitarian assistance and civilian evacuations from the Russian-occupied area.
