The announcements were made on the official websites of WGA and ASC.
2000 Meters to Andriivka won the WGA award in the category “Best Documentary Screenplay,” competing against Becoming Led Zeppelin and White with Fear.
Chernov and Babenko were also recognized by the American Society of Cinematographers, which has presented awards for outstanding cinematography since 1986.
The Ukrainian filmmakers won in the Documentary category, sponsored by Canon USA. It was the first ASC nomination for both of them. In the category, 2000 Meters to Andriivka competed with Come See Me in the Good Light and Folktales.

Earlier this year, Chernov also received the 2026 Paul Selvin Award from the Writers Guild of America. The award is given to a guild member whose script best reflects the principles of constitutional and civil rights and the freedoms essential to writers.
“I mostly am seen as a documentary filmmaker, but in my heart I’m a writer. So, when it comes to the WGA, when it comes to the recognition of my writing, that’s incredibly precious, because that’s where it all started. II think sooner or later I’ll end up in a little cabin somewhere, just writing, writing, writing because that’s the most precious art there is for me,” Mstyslav Chernov commented.

The documentary 2000 Meters to Andriivka follows a Ukrainian platoon tasked with advancing through a heavily fortified kilometer of forest to liberate the strategically important village of Andriivka from Russian forces. Accompanying the soldiers, the filmmaker records their movement through a devastated landscape, where each step forward makes it clearer that the war may not end anytime soon.
Previously, the Ukrainian documentary 2000 Meters to Andriivka has been included among the five best documentary films of 2025 by the US National Society of Film Critics.
The film, which portrays the hardship and endurance of Ukrainians during the ongoing war, has gained broad international recognition. Other titles on the critics’ shortlist include Come See Me in the Good Light, My Mom Jayne, Natchez, and Orwell: 2+2=5.
