Airbus Chairman Calls for European Tactical Nuclear Weapons to Deter Russia

Airbus Chairman René Obermann has called for European powers to develop a joint tactical nuclear weapons program in response to the growing threat posed by Russia’s deployment of nuclear-capable Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad and Belarus, Reuters reported on November 18.
Speaking at the Berlin Security Conference, Obermann warned that Europe remains vulnerable to Russia’s regional nuclear capabilities, particularly the short-range ballistic Iskander missiles stationed just across NATO’s eastern flank.
“Our Achilles heel seems to be what Russia threatens us with fairly publicly: That’s 500 plus tactical nuclear warheads on Iskander 26 missiles stationed right in front of our door in Kaliningrad, in addition to the newly stationed ones in Belarus,” Obermann stated.

He urged leading European nations, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, to collaborate on a comprehensive and phased nuclear deterrence program, with a strong emphasis on tactical capabilities.
“Germany, France, Britain and other willing European member states should agree on a common and staged nuclear deterrence program, including very much so the tactical level. I think that would be a massive sign of deterrence,” he added.
Previously, it was reported that German forces have conducted a series of urban warfare drills in Berlin in response to growing concerns that Russia could regain offensive capability to strike NATO territory as early as 2028.
