Canada to Invest $660 Million in Drone and Military Tech Development

The Canadian government is allocating over $660M to advance the development of drones and other military technologies. The Canadian Ministry of Science announced this investment as part of the country’s broader defense industry strategy.
The funding will be managed through the National Research Council of Canada.

This council is responsible for a long-term program aimed at building domestic defense capabilities and developing dual-use technologies that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.
A key part of the initiative includes increasing Canada’s internal capacity for unmanned systems and aerospace technology. To support this goal, the government plans to establish a dedicated Drone Innovation Center.
Additionally, Canada will purchase a Bombardier Global 6500 aircraft to serve as a specialized platform.
This aircraft will be used to test and develop new military technologies through partnerships between the government, private industry, and academic institutions. The program also provides support for Canadian companies currently working on dual-use technological solutions.

Officials expect these measures to strengthen the technological power of the nation’s defense sector and support the growth of the domestic industry.
This move follows Canada’s decision in February to join the European Union’s SAFE program, which focuses on rearming EU member states and reinforcing the European defense-industrial base.
This shift comes as other nations also move to rapidly scale their unmanned capabilities. Ukraine has become a global leader in this field, aiming to produce millions of units annually and currently manufacturing hundreds of long-range strike drones every day.
The European Union is launching a large-scale rearmament plan focused on joint drone production, and the United States continues to accelerate its programs to integrate thousands of autonomous systems into its military operations over the coming months.
Meanwhile, it was reported that Canada announced a large military aid package that included funding for drones, counter-drone systems, electronic warfare equipment, and broader defense-industry cooperation with Ukraine.
