President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, signed a new law “Lex Ukraine,” tightening regulations on granting Czech citizenship to Russian nationals. The announcement was made on the Presidential website on February 6.

According to Radio Svoboda, under the new legislation, even if Russian applicants renounce their citizenship, obtaining Czech nationality will generally not be possible until the war in Ukraine concludes. Additionally, a new provision in the criminal code prohibits cooperation with foreign governments without official approval.

The law also includes measures regarding the status of Ukrainian refugees. Temporary protection for Ukrainians in the Czech Republic has been extended for another year, allowing them continued access to public healthcare, education, and employment. For those who can support themselves independently, a special residence permit is available, which may eventually lead to permanent residency.

Previously, it was reported that the Czech Senate passed “Lex Ukraine,” a law extending temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees while introducing new restrictions on Russian nationals seeking citizenship.
