The Czech Republic is exploring the possibility of establishing a “Ukrainian Legion,” similar to a project already implemented by Poland. This initiative would involve the training of Ukrainian citizens abroad for service in Ukraine, according to Czech media, citing sources from the Czech Ministry of Defense.

The Czech Ministry of Defense is currently assessing the Polish project from both legal and practical perspectives. The proposed plan would allow Ukrainians residing in the Czech Republic to undergo training abroad and serve in the Ukrainian armed forces while continuing to live in the Czech Republic. Participation in the training would be voluntary.

Ministry spokesperson David Polak confirmed that the ministry is gathering information from the Polish side. Once the necessary details are obtained, a decision will be made regarding the feasibility of implementing a similar project in the Czech Republic.

Recent data indicate that there are over 100,000 Ukrainian men aged 18 to 65 currently residing in the Czech Republic. Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan has stated that there is no legal mechanism to forcibly return these individuals to Ukraine while temporary protection measures are in place.

Czech Defense Minister Jana Černochová noted that the Polish approach to forming legions is effective. Many Ukrainians want to support their country but are reluctant to return to Ukraine due to the uncertain situation. Therefore, serving in a unit based in the Czech Republic could be considered a viable option.

It is worth mentioning that in July this year, Ukraine and Poland signed a security agreement that includes the creation of a “Ukrainian Legion.” This unit will consist of Ukrainian citizens temporarily residing abroad and will undergo training in NATO countries, including Poland.
