Daily Update: Russia Loses 1,070 Troops, 9 Tanks, and 3 Air Defense Systems in Ukraine

Russia lost another 1,070 troops and nine tanks over the past 24 hours, according to a morning update released on January 22 by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The General Staff said Russian forces also suffered significant equipment losses across multiple categories, as fighting remained most intense on the Pokrovsk and Huliaipole axes, where Ukrainian defenders repelled dozens of assaults.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, estimated cumulative Russian losses now stand at approximately 1,230,840 personnel, Ukrainian military officials reported.

According to the General Staff’s latest assessment, Russia has lost an estimated 11,596 tanks, 23,943 armored fighting vehicles, and 36,516 artillery systems since the invasion began. Losses also include 1,623 multiple-launch rocket systems, 1,282 air defense assets, and more than 112,800 operational-tactical drones.

Russian aviation losses remain unchanged, with totals holding at 434 aircraft and 347 helicopters, while naval losses include 28 ships and boats and two submarines.

The update also detailed the scale of Russian attacks over the past day. Ukrainian positions and populated areas came under two missile strikes and 84 airstrikes, with Russian aircraft dropping 197 guided aerial bombs. In addition, Russian forces launched over 6,100 loitering munitions and carried out more than 3,500 artillery and rocket strikes, including 21 attacks using multiple-launch rocket systems.

Earlier, reports emerged that Russian forces in the Kharkiv region were struggling to coordinate between their units, leading to frequent incidents of “friendly fire” and overall disorder on the battlefield.
