A series of drones struck an energy facility in Russia’s Volgograd region overnight, leaving several districts without power, according to Russian media Astra citing regional authorities on November 8.
Governor Andrey Bocharov confirmed that Russian air defense systems “repelled” the drone assault but admitted that falling debris damaged energy infrastructure, disrupting electricity supply in multiple areas.
“Objects of the energy infrastructure of the Volgograd region were attacked by UAVs, and some settlements were left without electricity,” Bocharov said.
The strike reportedly targeted the Balashovskaya substation in the Novonikolaevsky district, a key node in Russia’s southern energy grid. The same facility had been attacked earlier in October, causing a fire, according to Astra.

The Balashovskaya substation, with a reported capacity of 1,523 MVA, transfers electricity from the Volga Hydroelectric Power Station to central Russia. It also supplies parts of the Volgograd, Voronezh, and Saratov regions.
Local authorities said restoration work was underway in several affected districts, including Kikvidzensky, Uryupinsky, Novonikolaevsky, and Novoanninsky.
Earlier, Ukrainian forces carried out a high-precision strike on a Russian drone hub at the occupied Donetsk airport, destroying up to 1,000 Shahed-type drones, fuel depots, and key infrastructure.
According to Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, the operation involved long-range weapons and drones, with over 90% of the systems hitting their targets after months of reconnaissance.
