Eight Nordic-Baltic States Insist on Strong Security Guarantees for Ukraine in Peace Talks With Russia

Eight Northern European and Baltic nations have declared that any diplomatic resolution to the Russia’s war against Ukraine must protect the “vital security interests” of both Ukraine and Europe.
The joint statement was published on the official website of the Swedish government on August 10.
According to the signatories, these interests refer to “robust and credible security guarantees” that will enable Ukraine to effectively safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“We reaffirm the principle that international borders must not be changed by force. Negotiations can only take place in context of a ceasefire,” the statement reads.

The countries also stressed that “no decisions on Ukraine without Ukraine, and no decisions on Europe without Europe.”
The Nordic-Baltic Eight also welcomed Trump’s initiative, underscoring their readiness to contribute to ending the war through diplomatic means, while continuing to provide military and financial assistance to Ukraine.
“Peace will only come through a combination of determined diplomacy, unwavering support for Ukraine, and consistent pressure on the Russian Federation to halt its unlawful war,” the countries said, outlining their position.
