Estonia to Build 600 Bunkers Along Russian Border to Defend Against Drone and Artillery Strikes

Estonia is set to begin building fortifications along its border with Russia this year, the country’s public broadcaster ERR reported on April 2.
By early summer, the Estonian Defense Forces are expected to select one of two bunker models that underwent testing last year. Construction is then slated to begin within six months. The first fortified position, comprising 14 bunkers, is planned for completion by autumn in northeastern Estonia. An additional four bunkers will be built along the southeastern border.
According to the outlet, the military noted that the bunker designs were tested taking into account the experience of the war in Ukraine. The shelters are specifically engineered to withstand direct hits from 152mm artillery shells.
While the bunkers were not specifically tested against drone attacks, the amount of explosives used during trials ensures they can withstand such threats as well, said Ainar Afanasyev, the head of the engineering department of the headquarters of the Defense Forces division.

“When installing bunkers, we take into account the experience gained in Ukraine, where special nets and means are used against drones so that the drone cannot directly hit the bunker,” Afanasyev explained.
The bunker line is reportedly only just one part of a much larger defense network. Plans also include installing anti-tank barriers and setting up firing positions. Some elements of the defensive zone will only be deployed in times of crisis.
In total, Estonia plans to deploy around 600 bunkers along its eastern border. Most of the construction will take place on state-owned land, though some private plots will also be used.
Officials say there’s no need to purchase the private land outright, securing usage rights is sufficient, as each bunker requires only about 50 square meters of space.
On March 21, Estonia’s Ministry of Defense announced that Ukraine had officially submitted a list of military aid needs valued at €100 million, which will be procured from Estonian defense companies.
