The European Union will be providing €160 million ($177 million) to help Ukraine prepare for another winter in the face of Russian strikes on the energy system.

This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a briefing on September 19.

She noted that the EU will provide an additional amount of about €160 million for this winter, which will include €60 million ($66 million) of humanitarian aid, for the installation of warming centers, heaters and else, and about €100 million ($111 million) for repair work and developing renewable energy.

Close to €100 million of the funding comes from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets in the EU, von der Leyen said.

"Russia must pay for the destruction it caused," von der Leyen wrote on her account on X (formerly Twitter).

With Russia's deliberate and consistent targeting of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the country is suffering from an unprecedented energy crisis. Next winter is expected to challenge the Ukrainian people in a manner not witnessed in Europe since World War II. Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy recently stated that Russia destroyed 80% of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
