EU Eyes Boost in US LNG Imports to Replace Russian Gas Amid Energy Shift

The European Union is weighing plans to replace imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) with supplies from the United States.
European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen announced the initiative at a briefing on September 18, Suspilne reported. She explained that the phase-out of Russian LNG is a central part of the EU’s broader strategy to fully eliminate reliance on Russian energy resources.
“Our industry will still need natural gas for the coming years. The volumes we no longer purchase from Russia have to come from somewhere. And the United States already played an important role in 2022, when Russia cut off gas supplies to Europe and we had to look for alternatives,” the spokesperson said.

She noted that the EU had been consistent in its approach even before the second Trump administration took office and had already seen potential to increase LNG purchases from the United States. She added that while LNG would not be the only product imported from the US, it was already being brought in at significant volumes.
Itkonen added that the European Commission will assist European companies in expanding imports of American LNG.
Earlier, it was reported that Russia’s fuel crisis is deepening as Ukrainian drone strikes on oil refineries continue to disrupt supplies nationwide.
