EU Restricts Classified Intel to Hungary Amid Signs of Leaks to Russia

EU leaders are restricting the flow of classified information to Hungary amid growing concerns that Viktor Orbán’s government is sharing sensitive intelligence with the Kremlin, Politico reported on March 23.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed long-standing suspicions on March 22, stating that reports of Budapest detailing EU Council meetings to Moscow “shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.”

According to a Washington Post investigation, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó frequently updated Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during breaks in high-level European summits throughout the war. These security worries have led to a surge in “breakout formats"—such as the Weimar Triangle and the Nordic-Baltic Eight—where critical diplomacy occurs in smaller groups to exclude Hungarian officials.
While opposition leader Péter Magyar has labeled the behavior “outright treason,” EU diplomats indicated there will be no formal response before Hungary’s crucial April 12 election to avoid providing Orbán with campaign leverage, Politico wrote.
