Explosion Hits Russian Chemical Plant 1,700 km From Ukraine Amid Drone Strike Claims

While Russian leader Vladimir Putin was delivering his speech at the Valdai Club on October 2, reports appeared of explosions at a chemical facility in the Urals.
According to Russian Telegram channels, the incident occurred at the Berezniki branch of Azot, part of the Uralchem chemical company in Perm krai. The site is located around 1,700 kilometers from Ukraine’s border.

Local sources mentioned explosions and possible drone activity, though Russian media have suggested the cause may have been a “production refrigerator malfunction.”
The plant, which reached a record output of more than 2.3 million tons in 2024, is one of Russia’s largest producers of nitrogen fertilizers, also providing materials used in the manufacture of explosives.
If confirmed, the incident would mark one of the most distant strikes reported against Russian industrial infrastructure.
Earlier, it was reported that Major General Andrii Hnatov, chief of the Ukrainian General Staff, said that Kyiv has both the means and the weapons to carry out responses if Moscow continues to target Ukrainian infrastructure.
