Finland Proposes Hosting NATO Reconnaissance Drone Base for Russian Border Surveillance
Finland has proposed to host a base for large NATO reconnaissance drones on its territory, according to Yle on November 9.
As reported by Yle, NATO’s plans for a new base are still in the early stages, and there is a recognized need within the Alliance for a reconnaissance drone location in Northern Europe.
The Finnish Air Force has identified four possible bases, with Pirkkala being the most likely location.
Currently, these drones operate from Italy, conducting reconnaissance missions in Finnish airspace to gather intelligence along the eastern border.
In late August, it was reported that such patrols were taking place, with a US Air Force RQ-4 Global Hawk strategic reconnaissance drone carrying out operations. The Global Hawk made several monitoring loops near Russia’s Saint Petersburg and continued toward Murmansk.
Subsequently, the US deployed an RC-135U Combat Sent manned reconnaissance aircraft, which also conducted surveillance flights in the area.
A decision on the drone base location is expected next year.
Previously, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden called for the formation of a European army, voicing concerns that Donald Trump’s potential return to office could weaken Europe’s security guarantees.
