Finland is adjusting its military aid strategy for Ukraine by introducing a new support program focused on purchasing weapons from its domestic defense industry, the country’s Defense Ministry announced on its website on February 27.

Under this initiative, Finnish-made military equipment will be supplied to Ukraine as part of upcoming aid packages. The Finnish Defense Ministry has proposed allocating €660 million to fund the program.

“With this new support program, Finnish companies will play a key role in sustaining Ukraine. Until now, we have primarily assisted by transferring equipment from our own stockpiles, but moving forward, we will place significant orders with our domestic industry,” said Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen.

Häkkänen expressed hope that this initiative will strengthen Ukraine’s position in achieving a just peace while also ensuring long-term contracts for Finland’s defense industry.

In the coming weeks, a roundtable discussion, chaired by Finland’s defense minister, will be convened to further address financial aspects with manufacturers.

The new aid program has been in development under the leadership of Finland’s Defense Ministry since last autumn, in close coordination with industry partners, international allies, and Ukrainian authorities.

Procurement will be handled by Finland’s Defense Forces Logistics Command, with key selection criteria including Ukraine’s most urgent military needs, production speed, and rapid delivery capabilities.

Earlier in January, the Finnish government has approved its 27th military aid package for Ukraine, valued at $206 million (€198 million), the Finnish Defense Ministry announced.
