The body of a fourth US Army soldier, missing since March 25 during a training exercise near Pabradė, Lithuania, was recovered on April 1, according to US Army Europe and Africa.
The soldier, assigned to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, was located in the afternoon after a week-long search effort. The individual’s identity is being withheld until next of kin are notified.
US military officials confirmed that the search involved personnel from the US Army, US Navy, Lithuanian, Polish, and Estonian Armed Forces, as well as Lithuanian civilian agencies. The combined team worked continuously over several days to recover the soldiers.
The other three US soldiers and their M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicle were found on March 31 in a peat bog near the training site.
The soldiers were deployed to Lithuania as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a long-standing mission to enhance NATO deterrence efforts in the region. All four were permanently stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
The US Army has launched an investigation into the incident. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
Earlier, on March 26, the US Embassy in Lithuania reported that four American soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, went missing during training exercises at the General Silvestras Žukauskas training ground near Pabradė, close to the Belarusian border.
