The Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant, one of the largest facilities of Russia’s state-owned Gazprom, has suspended operations following a Ukrainian drone strike on February 3. The plant produces gasoline, diesel fuel, and is Russia’s primary supplier of sulfur used in explosives.

The Moscow Times reported the shutdown, citing regional governor Igor Babushkin. According to the publication, production processes at the refinery—which processes over 8,000 tons of gas condensate daily—were halted in advance of the attack, which later caused a fire.

Authorities stated that the production shutdown was carried out in an orderly manner, and plant employees were moved to bomb shelters.

Multiple attack drones targeted critical Russian energy infrastructure overnight, hitting the Lukoil oil refinery in Volgograd, the Astrakhan gas processing plant, and the Orenburg gas processing plant, the head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, Andrii Kovalenko, reported on February 3.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense report, at least 70 drones targeted six Russian regions.

Previously, the Volgograd Oil Refinery, one of Russia’s top ten largest refineries, was targeted for the second time in a week. On January 31, a fire broke out at the facility, which is a key fuel supplier for southern regions of Russia.
