Germany’s security agencies have warned that Russian intelligence services are using social media platforms to recruit supporters and spread disinformation.

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), and the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) issued a joint statement saying that Russia has intensified efforts to target German citizens online, according to The Associated Press on September 2.

“Russian services are increasingly trying to establish contact with people in Germany via social networks, messenger services, and job portals,” the agencies said.

They noted that those targeted are often approached under false identities with offers ranging from cooperation on political projects to financial incentives.

The statement also highlighted the role of fake accounts and manipulated content in spreading Kremlin narratives designed to weaken trust in German institutions and fuel social division.

Officials urged citizens to exercise caution online and report suspicious activity.

The warning follows a series of recent incidents in which Russian-linked operations sought to infiltrate political debates and gather sensitive information in Germany, according to the Associated Press.

Earlier, it was reported about a Russian disinformation campaign aimed to boost the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), undermining mainstream German parties.
