Germany Plans $7.6 Billion Investment in Combat and Reconnaissance Vehicles

Germany plans to invest almost 7 billion euros ($8.1 billion) in new armored vehicles, according to documents from the Ministry of Finance cited by Reuters on October 13.
The government intends to order 424 combat vehicles under two major contracts. The main part of the deal involves a framework agreement with defense company General Dynamics for the development and purchase of 274 reconnaissance vehicles, valued at roughly $3.8 billion.
The first deliveries are expected in 2028.
A second project covers the procurement of 150 Schakal wheeled armored vehicles, worth about $3.7 billion, with deliveries planned between 2027 and 2031.

Both agreements are pending approval from the Bundestag’s Budget Committee in the coming days.
Since this summer, Germany has been preparing a series of large-scale defense purchases as part of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s plan to build Europe’s strongest conventional army, reduce reliance on the United States, and strengthen European security leadership.
Previously, it was reported that Moscow is preparing to “test Europe’s borders” and could spark a military confrontation at any moment, Germany’s top intelligence chief warned, calling Russia a direct “adversary” of his country.
