Germany currently has no capacity to deliver additional Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said, citing limits on the country’s own military readiness, according to Deutsche Welle on January 26.

Pistorius said Germany has already made a “disproportionately large contribution” by transferring more than one-third of its Patriot systems to Ukraine, leaving Berlin unable to commit further units at this stage.

He explained that additional deliveries are not possible because the Bundeswehr is still waiting for replacement systems and must preserve its ability to train personnel and maintain operational readiness for Patriot air defense operations.

The defense minister also acknowledged that the number of IRIS-T air defense systems supplied to Ukraine remains insufficient, particularly as Russian air attacks continue to intensify.

According to Pistorius, Germany is currently the only country capable of supplying IRIS-T systems to Ukraine and has been doing so, as he put it, “in a sense on a continuous basis.”

Germany has so far delivered a total of five Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine as part of its military assistance, making it one of Kyiv’s largest single contributors of high-end air defense assets.

Earlier, reports emerged that Ukraine brought two additional Patriot air defense systems into service to help protect cities and critical infrastructure.
